Have you ever had one of those weeks where you look at your routine and think:
“Well… I guess I need to start over Monday.”
Maybe you've missed a few workouts.
You've eaten out more than usual.
Your sleep hasn't been great.
You've been stressed.
Life has been busy.
And suddenly, instead of simply getting back to your routine, you feel like you've completely fallen off the wagon.
So what do you do?
You tell yourself you'll start over Monday.
And then Monday comes with its own set of responsibilities.
Before you know it, another week has passed.
But what if you don't need to start over?
What if you simply need to come back?
We Don't Need Another Extreme Plan
As women, especially as we move through our 40s and beyond, it's easy to feel like we need to do something drastic to get our health back on track.
A new diet.
A harder workout program.
Cutting out entire food groups.
Exercising every single day.
Starting a strict 30-day challenge.
But I've been thinking a lot lately about how often we make things more complicated than they need to be.
I've been doing some simplifying in my own life recently—looking at where I'm spending my time, what is actually producing fruit, and what deserves my attention.
And I've realized something:
The things that matter most are often the simplest things.
That applies to our health, too.
You don't need to completely overhaul your life every time you get off track.
You need to return to the basics.
1. Come Back to Movement
Maybe you missed a week of workouts.
Maybe you've been traveling.
Maybe work has been crazy.
Maybe you've simply been tired.
That's okay.
You don't have to punish yourself by suddenly exercising twice a day.
Just start moving again.
Go for a walk.
Do a short strength workout.
Stretch.
Take the stairs.
Get outside.
Your next workout doesn't have to make up for the workouts you missed.
It simply needs to be your next workout.
For women over 40, strength training is especially important because maintaining muscle, strength, mobility, and independence becomes increasingly valuable as we age.
You don't have to be perfect.
You just have to keep coming back.
2. Come Back to Nourishing Food
One weekend of birthday dinners, vacations, celebrations, or eating out doesn't undo your progress.
And you don't need to "make up" for it by drastically restricting your food the next day.
Instead, return to balanced, nourishing meals.
Think:
Protein at your meals
Plenty of fruits and vegetables
High-fiber foods
Healthy fats
Whole-food carbohydrates that fuel your body
Plenty of water
You don't need to eat perfectly.
You need to develop a way of eating that you can actually live with.
Consistency beats perfection.
3. Come Back to Sleep and Recovery
This is one I've been reminded of personally.
Sometimes our bodies simply need rest.
We live in a culture that celebrates being busy, but your body doesn't care how productive you were.
It needs recovery.
If you've had a stressful week or haven't been sleeping well, don't respond by pushing yourself harder.
Give yourself permission to recover.
Go to bed a little earlier.
Take a short nap if you need one.
Schedule a lighter workout.
Create some quiet.
Rest isn't laziness.
Recovery is part of a healthy lifestyle.
4. Come Back to the Basics of Your Daily Routine
When life gets chaotic, it's easy to abandon every healthy habit because we can't do everything.
But here's the problem with that mindset:
We start believing that if we can't do it perfectly, there's no point in doing it at all.
I want to challenge that.
Can't work out for an hour?
Move for 20 minutes.
Can't prepare an elaborate healthy meal?
Make something simple with protein and produce.
Can't get 10,000 steps?
Get 6,000.
Didn't drink enough water today?
Start tomorrow morning with a glass.
You don't have to wait for the perfect circumstances.
Do what you can with what you have today.
Small choices still count.
5. Come Back to God
And this one may be the most important of all.
I've been reminded recently that my day doesn't need to begin with my phone.
It doesn't need to begin with emails, notifications, social media, sleep data, client check-ins, or my to-do list.
It needs to begin with God.
Matthew 6:33 says:
“But seek first the kingdom of God and his righteousness, and all these things will be added to you.”
Sometimes getting "back on track" isn't about adding another habit to your list.
Sometimes it's about returning to the One who should have been first all along.
When I start my day grounded in prayer and God's Word, everything else has a different perspective.
My work.
My health.
My relationships.
My responsibilities.
My priorities.
That doesn't mean the day will be perfect.
It means I'm not trying to carry it all by myself.
You Don't Have to Start Over
If you've been feeling like you've fallen off track lately, I want you to hear this:
You haven't failed.
You don't need a brand-new life.
You don't need to wait until Monday.
You don't need to punish yourself for the choices you made yesterday.
And you certainly don't need another extreme plan.
You simply need to make your next healthy choice.
Drink some water.
Take a walk.
Eat a nourishing meal.
Go to bed.
Pick up your weights.
Open your Bible.
Pray.
Then do it again tomorrow.
That's how sustainable wellness is built.
Not through perfection.
Through consistency.
Ask Yourself This Today
Instead of asking:
“How do I start over?”
Ask:
“What is one healthy thing I can return to today?”
Maybe it's movement.
Maybe it's better nutrition.
Maybe it's sleep.
Maybe it's taking care of yourself.
Maybe it's spending time with God.
Whatever it is, start there.
You don't have to do everything today.
Just come back to what matters.
And then take the next step.
